Jason Kearton - 1996 - 2001 Goalkeeper The 'Aussie keeper' made himself a hero of his time at Crewe. As the only keeper who could really make a claim to wear the number one shirt the former Everton back-up was ever present between 1996 and 2000. He wasn't the greatest at commanding his area but the blond haired keeper was certainly making it up with his shot stopping abilities. Best remembered for his Blackburn wonder show that saw his 15 saves bring home three points from the former Premiership champions. He's since moved back to Aus to play for Brisbane strikers. |
Rob Jones - 1988 - 1991 Defender Rob Jones only had a short period at Crewe, he came though the academy, or school of excellence, and went on to make 70 appearances at left back. He left for Liverpool for £300k as he followed David Platt into the Premiership, or then Division One. He was touted as England's best left back of his time, and hewould have gone on to a fabulous career had it not been for injuries. Jones's knee injury forced him to retire from the game in 1999, at the age of 27, and has since set up a buisness and keeps fit at the Alex training ground. |
Steve Macauley- 1991 - 2001 Defender Macca was signed from Fleetwood Town, after failing to go professional at Manchester City. Macauley soon went down in history books, not just for ten years at Crewe but the amount of times he literally drew blood for the cause. The former captain made the defence his own and for most players he was the one they looked up to. Solid as a rock in the centre he became a all time great at Crewe and saw out ten years. He went on to play for Rochdale before settling in Macclesfield. |
Shaun Smith - 1991 - 2001 Defender From the same era as Macauley, Shaun Smith made an even bigger impact. 'Smithy' was signed from Emley in '91 and went on to play well over 400 games in a Alex shirt at left game and for a good chunk of those he was the captain. He is simply one of the 'true greats' of the club and will forever be remembered for his goal at Wembley that took Crewe in Division One for the first time ever, not to mention his curling free kicks. Shaun and Macca had a testimonial against Liverpool and Everton in 2002 when they were given a fantastic goodbye and thank you. Smithy now plays for Rochdale in Division Three. |
Geoff Thomas - 1984 - 1987 / 2001-2002 Defensive Midfielder Geoff Thomas arrived from Rochdale and proved to be one of a handful players who never made it at past clubs but soon made a name for themselves at Crewe. One of the gents of English football he was there to play for the club and not himself or his pay packet, mind you in 1984 there wasn't much of a pay packet. The battling midfielder moved to Crystal Palace in 1987 for a mesely £50,000 and was soon a cult hero there, and still is. He picked up nine England caps as well as going on to play for Wolves, Forest & Barnsley. The Alex legend did return to Crewe to end his career in 2001/2002 with a very respectable performance. Geoff is now recovering from leukaemia after being diagnosed in 2003. |
David Platt - 1985 - 1988 Midfielder Platty is always the name first of the media lips when Crewe are mentioned amongst the press. Signed as a player with no future - from Man Utd - Platt soon realised his potential at Crewe. He managed 56 goals in 134 appearances for Crewe and was a sensation that every Alex fan loved. Dario said that selling him for only £200,000 in 1988 to Aston Villa was the most regretable thing he's done as a manager. Platt went on to cost teams a total of £21million in transfer fees, he's captained England in World Cups, and has managed England U-21's. |
Danny Murphy - 1994 - 1997 - 1999 Midfielder What Murphy has done since leaving the Alex tops any other former Alex player. The Chester born and bred lad exceeded all expectations in his career. Many say he never looked quite good enough till 18-12 months before his departure in 1997 to Liverpool. Then a club record £3million was paid by Roy Evans for Murphy and he was thrown into the Liverpool team without warning in his first season. Some were right, he couldn't hack Div 2-Premiership but Murphy came back on loan to Crewe in 1999 when he repaid the club a final time, forming a formidable partnership with Seth Johnson to keep Crewe in Division 1. Murphy went back to Liverpool and has won the club and fans over, he's gone on to four sucessful seasons at Liverpool, he's won six trophies, been player of the year for 2004 and has won several England caps. |
Seth Johnson - 1994 - 1999 Midfielder Seth Johnson was, and is, nothing short of a god. His story starts on a beach in Devon as a 14 year old one pre-season where he spots Dario and asks for a trial. All went well and Seth even moved away from his family to train with the academy. He was soon unveiled to the Alex fans and was instantly a fans hero. He'll never be forgotten for when he turned down lucrative offers from the likes of Derby (Then Premiership) and Liverpool just to help Crewe stave off relegation in 1999. He won the hearts of thousands and his £3.5million move to Derby was well deserved. He went on to win a cap for England and a move for £7million to Leeds Utd but dreadful injuries have kept him out for long periods, with his most recent keeping him out from April 2004 to anywhere at the start of 2005. |
Craig Hignett - 1988 - 1992 Midfielder Whilst Hignett's home coming in 2004 was a night mare he will always be remember for the great player he was in his first years as a Alex player. Hignett was the awesome attacking player everyone wanted and was just a great on and off the pitch. In '92 he left for Middlesbrough after 110 games for the Alex and at Middlesbrough he was once again a true great. Fans took to him and he was treated like a lord. He went on to play for Barnsley, Blackburn and Leicester, and at Barnsley he was once again a great in their eyes. |
Ashley Ward - 1992 - 1994 Striker Ashley Ward was one of the best out and out strikers Crewe had had in a long time; he scored 34 goals in 64 appearances for the Alex after signing from Leicester in 1992. He was sorely missed when he left on a free for Norwich in 1994 with many quotes on "If we had Ward...". His short, but lovable spell at Crewe has been remembered with great pride. He is currently a back up striker for Sheffield United, where he expects to end his career. |
Dele Adebola - 1993 - 1998 Striker Dele will always be remebered for the 16 goals in the push for promotion in 1996, where he only played 32 goals. At 6ft and, what shal we say, 'big' he was deceptively quick on the turn and he was a handful for any defender. He may a £1.5 million switch to Birmingham in 1998 where he scored for fun until a nasty knee injury knocked his career off course. He failed to regain his best form and was loaned out to the likes of Oldham before being released, unsucessful spells at Crystal Palace, Coventry and Burnley have since arose. |
