The Ground Itself:
The Walkers Stadium is one of the new breed of football stadia. It is a simple, fully enclosed ground that cost £35m to construct in August 2002. It is extremely similar to Pride Park, The Riverside, St. Mary’s, The Madejski Stadium, Darlington’s Reynolds Arena and Hulls’ Kingston Communications Stadium in that it is painfully bland inside, totally lacking character and atmosphere.
The exterior of the stadium is mightily impressive (especially compared to Filbert Street). There is a huge glass wall with an engraved Foxes’ badge dominating. The huge posters of City’s most famous son, Gary Lineker are a nice touch, but the constant reminders of club and stadium sponsors Walkers Crisps are extremely annoying. Such advertising completely covers the inner roof of the stadium along with pictures of ex-Foxes.
The four stands are exactly the same. Firstly, The Fosse Kop, referring to the original name of the club (Leicester Fosse), is the home end where the majority of home noise originates. It houses approximately 4,000 home fans and is identical to The Lineker Stand which sits opposite. The two main stands: The Alliance and Leicester Stand and The West Stand are also identical.
Away fans are situated in the corner area of the Lineker and Alliance and Leicester stands, with about 3,000 seats made available. The view from all areas of the ground is described as 'extremely good', but fans often complain of being too far away from the action.
Fans are, however, treated to luxurious facilities compared to other grounds, with televisions, a wide range of food and and alcohol available.
Want a drink?
The city centre is only a short walk away from the Walkers Stadium, where various pubs and clubs cater for away fans. Away fans are not allowed in the Victory Pub which is the nearest establishment to the ground.
Where to Park?
Leicester Rugby Club in Welford Road offer parking spaces for £3, and there is street parking galore around the ground.
