The Priestfield has been completely revamped over the past few years since the Gills’ entry to Division One in 2000 via the playoffs. Chairman Paul Scally has ploughed money into redeveloping the impressive Medway Stand into a double-tiered structure that is capable of holding approximately 5000 home supporters. It is the ground’s largest stand and has a row of executive boxes across the structure. This stand boasts a conference facility that according to the club is ‘unrivalled throughout Kent, equalling the best the West End of London has to offer and brings it into the heart of the county”. The opposite stand, The Gordon Road Stand, is in similar size to the away stand at Gresty Road, holding about 1500, and used to be a terrace before seats were put onto it.
The Rainham End is the home end, a tidy single tiered end that has been redeveloped over the past few years. It looks extremely smart and replaced an old all-standing terrace, as did the away end, The Gillingham Town End. This is currently in the process of redevelopment as the Gills continue their process of making The Priestfield into a worthy Division One stadium. The end will be ready for use next season and they hope to name it The Brian Moore Stand. It is planned to hold about 3500 spectators and is costing £1.5 million to build.
Want a drink?
Gillingham town centre is not too far away from the ground, and there are many pubs and drinking establishments dotted around here. Away fans are advised to stay clear of ‘The Cricketers’ in Sturdee Avenue.
