The Ground Itself:
Highfield Road is an above average venue to watch football, and is often overlooked due to the club’s unfashionable reputation and the unadventurous layout of the ground. However, it is a cosy, enclosed and warm ground that gives the fans a good, close view of the action.
Away fans are housed in half of the two-tiered Mitchell & Butler Stand (aka The North Stand), which sits along the pitch, giving a good view despite the supporting pillars.
The Britannia Tyres Stand sits opposite to the aforementioned away stand, and is by far the grounds’ premier structure. It is very modern looking, has a smart row of executive boxes running across the top, has a plush cushioned area in the centre and makes one wonder why a club in such a position as Coventry City are so intent on moving to The Coventry Arena’, which will cost them £60m. There will only be an increase of 8,000 seats: it is not as if City fill Highfield Road every game is it? The last thing cash-strapped Coventry need is to spend more money on something they do not particularly need.
The NTL East Stand is the home end of Coventry City; a single tiered end that is the atmospheric ‘Kop’ of the ground. Every stand is of similar height to the remaining others, with the McDonalds Family Stand completing the quartet. This is a double-tiered affair with a scoreboard and strange corporate hospitality suite seemingly made up three porta-kabins nailed together.
Want a drink?
Both home and away fans are generally made welcome in the pubs around Highfield Road, with the Rose and Crown, The Rose and Woodbine and the Biggin Hotel, which are all in walking distance if the ground.
