Wigan warmed up for the mouth watering Worthington Cup clash with Manchester City next week with an impressive 2-0 triumph over promotion rivals Crewe at the JJB stadium The home side stretched their impressive unbeaten run to 14 games thanks to goals from Andy Liddell and Crewe's Steve Foster, who put through his own net on the stroke of half time.
But Wigan boss Paul Jewell maintains that his team still has some way to go before he will be truly satisfied.
Jewell said after the game: "Once again we created chances but didn't stick them away and that for me is the only down side of a satisfactory afternoon." His Crewe counterpart Dario Gradi refused to blame the referee for the 10th minute sending off of defender Richard Walker, in the incident that lead to the penalty, which Liddell converted to put Wigan in front.
Gradi said "I attach no blame to the referee whatsoever. It was a stupid thing for Richard to do and from then on we were always chasing the game.
Wigan's domination was highlighted by the fact that they had no fewer than 23 serious attempts on goals while Crewe could muster just three.
Jewell's comment that his team will need to stick more chances away should be tested to the full against the Premiership giants from Maine Road
