Turf Moor Embarrassment

I'll stick my neck on the line and say Burnley are probably one of the three worst sides in the division and to lose to them by such a score of 3-0 was nothing more than an embarrassment.

Sod the report, I'm too annoyed to even bother counting which way the possession and chances went, but Burnley capitalised on our rather disgraceful defence to lift their spirits for five minutes after each goal before going back into their lack of rhythm and flare.

Not that we were better, or even near good enough. We lacked everything we had at Derby, whilst our defence continued it's dreadful form. We've now conceded fifth-teen in six games and for a supposed Championship team it's a disgraceful record.

All goals came through dreadful defending - as is the norm these days. The first from a corner, much like the first conceded at Derby. Into the middle and there was an unmarked McGreal. 1-0. The second was all down to Kenny Lunt, who had a dreadful first half, he made a school boy error when passing it to a Burnley player on the edge of the box. Chaplow took it wide, hit it across the face of the goal and there was Robbie Blake sliding in. 2-0.

The third, needless to say, was just as bad. No marking what so ever saw Chaplow race clear from the half way line just a few minutes after half time. Neatly slotted past Williams, the game was somehow wrapped up for Burnley.

It was a shame, early signs had us down for a superb performance. Tonkin was running riot down the left from his full back spot, Vaughany was putting superb balls through and Billy Jones had all the authority down the right but as soon as the first goal went in we seemed to let our fast attacking form go.

Talk about heads dropping. The midfield soon disappeared. Where did it go? We had no one getting stuck into Burnley's middle four. Kenny Lunt did nothing, gave the ball away countless times and messed up plenty of set pieces but absolutely nothing positive. Sorvel was ok but let the first goal slip with slack marking and he just isn't the man who you look on to stir it up in midfield.

In fact, David Vaughan was doing everything in the 'midfield'. He was by far our best player over the 90 minutes. He really got stuck in, made some superb balls and was so inspirational in his play. He, along with Luke Varney, was the only real 'shiner'. Varney came on and certainly took his chance to impress Dario.

He replaced the quiet and very poor Mark Rivers and soon made an impact. Within his 10-15 minutes he seemed to get all over; a general nuisance on the edge of the box whilst being able to defend 100% better than Rivers. Which isn't hard.

Other players; Deano looked injured, slow and generally off the pace. Steve Jones troubled Burnley at times but lack of service never got him near the goal. Foster was poor, first touch of a lamp post and clearance of a Walker and Moses was average. Ben Williams spent another 90 minutes wondering why he had signed for a team with such an inept defence & midfield.

So, we lost 3-0 and it was embarrassing. Combative midfielder (Cochrane or Bell?) needed NOW and commanding centre halve (Who?) needed NOW.

Ohh, just a word on the pre-match and half time entertainment... it was, erm, humourous - you can give Burnley that. A Peter Kay wannabe on the mic made the teams run out to "Show me the way to amarillo", hence the Peter Kay link.

His lame attempts at warming up the crowd ended up with the odd "Piss off!" coming from the silent pre-match crowd, and he helped make Burnley a laughing stock after calling Dean Ashton "Dave Ashton", twice, and announcing "Trevor Sinclair" as Man Of The Match.

Trevor... Frank. Frank... Trevor. Easy mistake.

Anything else?

No, but you'll probably hear more from me and others on the CreweAlex.com messageboard over the next couple of days.

Player ratings;

Ben Williams - 5 - Is he a different player to that who signed last season or is the defence that bad? The latter I reckon.

Billy Jones - 7 - One of our better players. Mark Rivers and Kenny Lunt left him over exposed but he kept it tight enough.

Steve Foster - 4 - Worst game is ages. Awful ball play.

Adie Moses - 5 - Fairly average.

Anthony Tonkin - 5 - Attacked well in the first half but went quiet in the second half. Didn't do anything wrong.

Neil Sorvel - 5 - Another ok perofrmance from Sorvs. Didn't do much wrong but wasn't exactly running the show.

Kenny Lunt - 4 - Poor passing all through the game, no authority in the midfield at all and was quite wimpish.

David Vaughan - 8 - My Man Of The Match. Gave everything to the game, closed down, attacked and really got stuck in.

Mark Rivers - 4 - Anonymous, as usual.

Dean Ashton - 4 - Poor control and not as sharp, but looked un-fit.

Steve Jones - 6 - Tried hard but nothing fell for him, along with poor service from the midfield.
