Hot-shot striker Leon Best stole the show with a brace to help Yeovil Town into the play-off zone.

The on-loan striker handed out a lesson to Crewe's dismal defence when he put the Somerset side two goals to the good after just eight minutes.

A host of Premiership scouts had gathered at Gresty Road to watch Crewe's highly-rated young strikeforce of Luke Varney and Nicky Maynard, but it was the Southampton loanee who filled their notebooks with a clinical display infront of goal.

He curled a superb shot from the edge of the box beyond keeper Ben Williams for his first in the fifth minute and then three minutes later he rose unmarked to meet Martin Brittain's right-wing cross with a thumping header for the quick-fire second.

Crewe were at sixes and sevens at the back and some angry fans were even calling for the head of veteran manager Dario Gradi.

Without a win since November 18, the Railwaymen were well off track and couldn't string more than a couple of passes together for most of the afternoon.

But Ryan Lowe did force Glovers keeper Steve Mildenhall into a fine one-handed save from his curling free kick.

Arron Davies was running the show in the middle for the visitors and Williams needed to get his body behind a fierce deflected effort.

But the Wales international winger was fortunate not to put through his own goal midway through the half when he stabbed a cross by David Vaughan over his own bar.

Billy Jones went close with a couple of shots from long range, but Crewe were lacking in inspiration and Yeovil finished the first half the stronger side with Lee Morris having his penalty appeal turned down.

Crewe brought on Lee Matthews and Michael O'Connor at the start of the second half and gradually clawed back into contention with Gary Roberts going close with a powerful drive which Mildenhall did well to block at his near post.

The keeper also saved bravely at Varney's feet before his side broke to add a third when Best flicked on for Morris to race clear and despite looking suspiciously offside he shot past Williams for what appeared to be the killer blow.

But Crewe mounted a late rally and Maynard reduced the arrears on 77 minutes when he rolled the ball home after Varney had been upended in the box.

Then Roberts half-volleyed Vaughan's cross into the far corner of the net to leave Yeovil hanging on for the win their earlier play had thoroughly deserved.
