Hat-trick hero Nathan Tyson walked away with the match ball but then missed the team coach back to Nottingham.

The embarrassed star was forced to ring a friend for a lift away home from the Alexandra Stadium after basking too long in the media limelight.

But earlier the former Wycombe youngster was no slouch as he blasted Crewe aside with a hat-trick inside nine first-half minutes.

The striker's clinical finishing just before the interval killed off the contest stone dead as the Railwaymen looked way off the pace.

Colin Calderwood's side offered speed and width and in Kris Commons had the best creative player on the pitch.

But it was Tyson's finishing that earned all the plaudits and rightly so leaving Forest to canter through the second half.

The league leaders came close to breaking the deadlock as early as the fourth minute when Sammy Clingan split the marking on the right of the box and Nicky Southall crashed a rising drive on to the far post.

Tyson was making only his second start since an August knee injury but his movement caused Crewe all sorts of problems at the back.

Grant Holt went close with a far post volley as the visitors piled on the pressure early on and while Nicky Maynard blasted wide for the Cheshire side, it was no surprise when Forest went ahead in the 31st minute.

Holt, free on the right flank, moved in and clipped an ambitious chip over young keeper Stuart Tomlinson and it dropped into the far corner.

Crewe responded instantly and after Tyson had shot into Tomlinson's hands, at the other end Maynard quickly latched on to a Ben Rix pass and was upended by Gary Holt.

Gary Roberts confidently dispatched his penalty high to the left of Paul Smith for the equaliser.

But within two minutes Forest were back in front as Julien Baudet mis-controlled a cross into the box with his chest and the ball sat up for Tyson to lash in a volley from ten yards.

Then Holt burst down the left and his cross picked out the Tyson standing at the back of the six-yard box for a header into the top corner in the 43rd minute.

Crewe were finished off before the half-time refreshments when Tomlinson could only push out John Curtis' shot and Tyson finished off the rebound from close range.

After the break Colin Calderwood's side cruised to an easy win and Tyson could have had another when he flicked a header on to the roof of the net.

But Maynard should have reduced the arrears when mis-kicked in front of an open goal after Smith made a mess punching a free-kick.
