Pope`s the Vale hero

Port Vale striker Tom Pope netted against his former club Crewe to ensure the derby-day points were shared in a 1-1 draw at Gresty Road.

Pope headed home to earn a deserved draw for the Valiants just two minutes after Byron Moore had given Crewe a second-half lead.

Adam Dugdale almost gave Alex the perfect start when Moore found the defender at the far post, but his shot was deflected to safety by Clayton McDonald.

Gareth Owen's tame effort was spilled by Steve Phillips but the Crewe keeper did well to keep out Ben Williamson's follow-up shot, before the striker found the side-netting with his second attempt. Williamson tested Phillips with a low drive before Moore unleashed a 30-yard drive which produced a stunning save from former Crewe keeper Stuart Tomlinson.

Phillips then kept out two Pope headers and used his feet to beat away Wlliamson's low drive. Moore finally broke the deadlock in the 74th minute, beating Rob Taylor before firing a right-footed shot in off the far post. But Pope headed in McDonald's flick-on from Rob Kozluk's throw-in to level two minutes later.
