Luton continued their impressive October form when Steve Howard's late winner earned a 1-0 victory at Crewe.
The Hatters are the form side in Division Two at the moment having picked up 19 of the last 21 points.
And although they were made to defend for long periods against Dario Gradi's top six side they threatened on the break before the former Northampton striker snatched the win.
Left-back Sol Davis attacked down the left flank and when his cross took a deflection off a Crewe defender it fell to Howard at the far post and he volleyed in past Clayton Ince.
In the first half Luton's French goalkeeper Cedric Berthelin had looked shaky with a couple of long-range Crewe shots.
Hatters boss Joe Kinnear has drafted in the keeper on a short-term contract as he has struggled to fill the number one jersey this season.
But Berthelin did his cause no good to earn a longer contract when he spilled David Wright's cross almost at the feet of the Division's leading scorer Rob Hulse, before Davis came to his rescue.
A Kenny Lunt shot swerved away from the keeper's grasp and he was glad to push the ball over his bar for a corner.
He did make one good save though, getting his body behind Rodney Jack's shot after the West Indian had broken free when Davis misplaced a pass just inside his own half.
But despite these chances for the home side Luton were dangerous on the break with Howard holding the ball up well and the centre forward came close to the opener in the 34th minute when he was fed a pass by Steve Robinson and poked a shot across into goal narrowly wide of the far post.
Crewe centre-half Richard Walker had a good opportunity ten minutes after the break, but his free header from Dave Brammer's cross had too much height and cleared the bar
