Crewe pay penalty

Gary Alexander's late penalty rescued a 1-1 draw for promotion-chasing Crawley in a lively encounter with Crewe before a record crowd of 4,723 at the Broadfield Stadium.

Alexander, on loan from Brentford, blasted his sixth goal for Crawley from the spot three minutes from time after substitute Lee Bell handled a cross from the right by Josh Simpson.

Byron Moore gave Crewe the lead in the 29th minute by drilling his ninth goal of the season into the bottom corner after being set up by Nick Powell.

Ajay Leitch-Smith was superbly denied by keeper Michel Kuipers five minutes later in a one-on-one situation following a 50-yard ball from Harry Davis.

Kuipers made a fine double save to keep out attempts from Powell and Moore shortly after the break, and the Crawley keeper produced a tremendous flying save to thwart Moore in the 50th minute.
