Crewe boss Dario Gradi today declared that 23-year-old defender David Wright is the best equipped of the current squad to make the step up to the top flight, after constant newspaper reports linking him with the likes of Leeds United, Fulham and Charlton Athletic.

"Of the current crop of players I feel that David Wright is the best equipped to go into the Premier League", said Gradi.

"If I was managing a Premier League team then I would definitely take a gamble on David Wright because I believe he could go to a Premier League club and pretty much go straight into the team."

With Dave Brammer missing since the 3-0 win over Derby two months ago, the academy graduate was handed the captains armband and has been in sparkling form for the reds at right back. He spent a day training with Leeds United when Peter Reid was in charge in August, after which he claimed to be ‘gutted’ that the move was not completed before the transfer window was closed.

The Italian boss added that he thinks Kenny Lunt is also well on the way to the Premiership: "Kenny is the next closest after David".
