Ben Williams will be given the chance to earn the number one spot following Clayton Ince's move to Coventry. Dario is keen to give the keeper a chance to rediscover the sort of form he showed during his loan spell at the end of the 2003/04 season. Having dazzled Alex fans with his agility, reflexes and shot stopping ability, Williams was signed on a free transfer following his release from Man Utd. However, memories of his astonishing save from Kevin Kyle at Sunderland seemed increasingly distant as Williams struggled to find the same sort of form he had displayed during his loan spell. Ultimately, this eminated in Williams losing the number one spot to Clayton Ince whose presence and ability to come for crosses resulted in him keeping the jersey for the rest of the season.
Despite speculation that Dario is ready to bring in a keeper to go straight into the side, it now appears that Ben Williams will be Crewe's number one come August 6th. However, Gradi added that if Williams struggles to find an acceptable level of form, he would be replaced. Dario stated, "With Clayton deciding to move on this summer, Ben will get the first opportunity to stake a claim for the number one spot. If he doesn't then like all players we will look to bring someone else in."
