Wanted: Left Back, required for immediate action!

With only three games gone, the problem position of left back is already causing concern for the Alex faithful and coaching staff alike.

After the departures of Shaun Smith and Phil Charnock in the summer, we were left with the prospect of having only one recognised left sided player in the first team squad. Yet after a summer of players being released by clubs and Bosman signings from many, we have failed to bring in a left sided player.

After only three games gone, the problem of who should play left back has resulted in David Vaughan playing left back against Northampton on the opening day of the season and at home against Notts County, yet after a man of the match winning display at Northampton his attacking threat was severly reduced and his attacks were limited. This resulted in him being pushed further up field and a re-shuffle resulted in Stephen Foster switching to left back and Sagi Burton partnering Sodje at centre back. The transition from centre half to full back has been made before by Foz, but that previously resulted in him becoming a makeshift right back. His performance at left back was average, but he will be the first to admit that his favoured position is centre half. Following Sagi Burton's injury in the second half, Richard Walker joined Sodje at centre back and the two full backs switched roles, with Foz moving to right back and David Wright to left back. This failed to improve our attacking fortunes down the left side and resulted in a lack ofservice for Vaughany who consitantly found himself dropping inside to receive the ball. It seems Dario doesn't want to play Vaughan at left back as his ability is far more effective served at left midfield, yet with no other left sided player available at Dario's disposal, we ask...
Surely there must be some left footed player willing to join us!?
My view is that a right footed player cannot fill the left back spot without huge disadvantages, but who and when will Dario bring in?
My personal preference would have been Darren Barnard, ex-Barnsley and now of Grimsby. Has vast expereince in the Premiership, division one and with Wales on the international front. Press reported that he had accepted a massive wage reduction in order to sign for Grimsby, allegedly earns only £1000 a week with the Mariners after receiving £8000 a week at Barnsley.
Money clearly isn't his prime incentive, yet we made no attempt to move for the player when he was released late last season, surely we could beat Grimsby's wage offer?
The search goes on, and the likelyhood is that we will sign some young reserve team player, much like Paul Boertein, in the hope he can fill the void left by the departures of Smithy and Charnock.
However, action must be taken if we are not to maximise the talent of Vaughany (wasted at left back) and get the best out of Foz (centre half). With only one recognised left footed player in the squad surely it is a matter of urgency that we recruit a left back?
