Crewe's joint top scorer Luke Varney seems to have caught the attention of the scouts with his goal scoring exploits this season.

Although Varney has heard about the persistent rumours linking him with Aston Villa, Portsmouth, Southampton, Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United he will not be drawn into any of the speculation. Varney told The Sentinel Newspaper "I've heard about the speculation, but it is just paper talk as far as I am concerned. I don't take much notice of it. I am just concentrating on doing well for Crewe.

"We're moving up the table now and I think we can aim above the play-offs. We've had a lot of injuries and our squad hasn't been together for a long time.

"Once we get all our players back it will be a great boost. As well as myself, we had Billy Jones and David Vaughan back at Brentford, and that added a lot of quality to the side."

24-year-old Varney only recently signed an extension to his contract at Gresty Road after putting in some excellent performances for the Railwaymen he has extended his stay until 2009.

It has been a steady rise for the former Quorn striker who impressed Crewe with his goal scoring exploits in the Midland Alliance; he was signed back in 2003 on transfer deadline day for a nominal fee. Any move that may happen would net the Midlands club a 20% windfall.
