The former Bradford City striker had already turned down a two-year deal at Chester City and hoped to gain a contract at Gresty Road after turning up at Dario Gradi's house asking for a trial.
Since then Crewe have signed Calvin Zola, Anthony Elding and have had a fee accepted for Clayton Donaldson, so the Crewe boss Steve Holland felt it was in the best interests that Johnson try and find another club as he would of been way down the pecking order.
Johnson had featured in Crewe's pre-season games at Quorn, Wrexham and Hull City and netted a brace at brace against Quorn.
Holland told the official site "I've spoken to Eddie this morning and we have decided to let him go. It wasn't an easy decision because Eddie has come here and done well for us."
Holland also went on to say"It wasn't easy for him to do what he did in the first place and he has certainly gone up in my estimation. People commented on what has gone on in the past but as far I was concerned that was all in the past. "We gave him an opportunity and have simply compared him with the other strikers we have here and the one we are trying to bring in"
