Wright and Reid
Stephen Wright came to Crewe in the 1999-2000 season and was sort of loved by the Crewe crowd with his approach to defending. The big eared scouser even adopted his own song from the Gresty Road end.
Wright though was also liked by Liverpool so a moved to Crewe was never really on the cards and when he returned he returned in style - as players usually do from Crewe. Wright made a few appearences for Liverpool and a couple in Europe - scoring once aswell. However with Markus Babble coming back to the Liverpool side there is little chance of a first team place in the side despite being tipped as one of the best up and coming England defenders.
Stephen Wright believes his moved to Sunderland is the right one: "Liverpool told me there was an offer (from Sunderland), but first I asked what my chances at Liverpool were.
"But, with Markus coming back in and Jamie (Carragher) there, they were probably going to be nil. But I left on great terms, there was no nastiness. "Once I had spoken to Peter, I made my decision. This is a massive club with

passionate and great supporters. They had a poor season last year but they can only go on."

Reid also believes the approach is a great one: "I'm delighted to bring Stephen to Sunderland. To be honest, I was not confident of it happening when I asked. Once I got encouragement it was the deal I wanted to do.

"He's a player I've had a look at over a number of years. He's young, strong, a good footballer and has played for Liverpool.

"He's come through a youth system that has produced Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher and he was rated at Anfield."
