As we told you on Saturday, the deal to take David Wright to Wigan Athletic was to be completed this afternoon after a medical at the JJB. Wright joins Paul Jewell's men after 15 years at the Alex and the academy.

The 24 year old made his debut in August 1997 in a 2-0 win at Norwich, he ironically ended his association with the club at home to Norwich 7 years and 236 appearances later. From 1999 onwards Wright was the ever present right back for the Alex after taking over from Marcus Bignot. Injuries hampered his early developement but in 2002-2003 he was going to make a name for himself.

His Division Two season saw him become the most consistent and reliable performer in the team and Dario quoted saying that not one player managed to get the better of Wright all season. In the summer of 2003 he was linked to the likes of Charlton and Fulham whilst having a week trial at Leeds but much to Wrighty's dismay nothing ever came off speculation.

He spent much of last season moving all over the field as the emergence of Billy Jones unsettled Wright's home at right back. He was playing the majority of games at centre back and left back by the end of the season - and the away trip to West Brom, in which he scored in, saw him even play in midfield.

On the last day of the season Dario told the press that Wrighty's time at the Alex was up and he would almost certainly be moving on to new things this summer and so it has turned out. Crewe accepted a undisclosed Wigan bid just over a week ago and after one or two unexpected snags Wright signed for Wigan today.

Wright told the Wigan Official Site, WiganLatics.co.uk, that he's excited by the move; "It's the first move of my career and that makes it even more exciting as it should give my career fresh impetus. You need a change sometimes and that is why I feel the time is right for this move. I'm hoping for more luck than I had on my last visit to the JJB though, as I only lasted about ten minutes before going off injured! Having said that, from the games I have played here, I must say that it's a very impressive place to play and I look forward to running out in a Wigan Athletic shirt.

"I've been impressed with the manager and when you are made to feel that he really wants to bring you in, it does make you want to sign. I'm the third signing of the summer I think and if you add those to the squad that is already here, I really think we can push for promotion again this season. I, like everyone else in the game, want to play at the very top level and hopefully the move to Wigan will help me achieve that dream."

It seems that the club won't be seeking a new replacement whilse Billy Jones and Chris McCready continue to impress in the right-back spot.
