Stockport sold us their left back Anthony Tonkin last month for £150k. Tonks was their only left back and manager Carlton Palmer is looking to replace Tonkin.

Today Palmer signed for Alex favourite Shaun Smith on loan. Smithy spent 10 seasons at Crewe, and scored the goal that took the Alex to division one in 1997, before moving to Hull City last year. However after only a couple of appearences Smith has moved to 3rd or 4th left back in the pecking order at Hull.

Smith returned to the Alex in the summer and trained at Reaseheath for a few weeks before he returned in a Alex shirt to play Liverpool and Everton in hiss and Steve Macauleys testimonial.

His latest manager, Peter Taylor, had some good words for Smith:

"He's going to sign for a month. I'm very lucky to have four or five left-backs at the club, with Dawson coming back, and Shaun is unlucky not to be involved at the moment.

"Shaun's contract expires at the end of the season, so this is a good opportunity for him. He's a great professional."
