Since Thordarson's sacking a week ago intrim manager Dario Gradi decided to act quickly and sign up the defender for a fee of £5k which will rise dependent on appearances.

Martin had been on trial at League Two rivals Dagenham & Redbridge and due to feature in a reserve game for the Daggers but with Crewe decided to snap up the defender and Martin jumped at the chance to join Crewe.

Gradi to BBC Radio Stoke "He is the type of signing this football club has to find." Gradi added "I spotted him in a training session, but wasn't in a position to bring him to the club,"

"I was told on Thursday night I was back in charge and on Friday morning I asked Neil Baker what had happened to the boy from Wealdstone."

Martin has been given squad number 30 and will train with the first team.
