The 32-year-old keeper who spent the majority of last season on loan signed for the Railwaymen by sticking to his word that he would sign upon his release from League One side Bristol Rovers.

Phillips has had two operations on his shoulders at the end of the season which will rule the Bristol born player out of pre-season and August but the player expects to return in September.

Phillips hopes when he is fit that he will be pushing for the number one spot which looks set to be filled by the oncoming loan keeper Rhys Taylor of Chelsea.

Phillips told BBC Radio Stoke "Dario Gradi has said that if he plays well, he'll keep his place and rightly so,"

"Come September, if we're second or third in the league, I'll be over the moon with that.

"If he's doing the business and the club are doing well, that's great."
