PAUL DICKOV’S penalty saved Leicester’s blushes as Crewe put up a dogged display for sick boss Dario Gradi.

Ref Andy Hall awarded the spot-kick for David Wright’s 80th-minute foul on Jordan Stewart and Dickov made no mistake.

It was hard luck on battling Crewe, whose manager Gradi is recovering in hospital from a heart op.

Debut boy Neil Edwards squandered two great chances for the Railwaymen.

He saw a 37th-minute shot cleared off the line by Steve Howey with keeper Ian Walker stranded after he had been robbed by Neil Ashton.

Then, after the break, striker Edwards fluffed a close-range header from Wright’s cross.

But Leicester’s own debutant Paul Brooker dragged a shot wide after a smart dummy from Dickov.

Injury-hit Foxes struggled to make an impact and Walker had to tip a Justin Cochrane header over the bar.

French midfielder Lilian Nalis had scored a long-range belter in Leicester’s last home match against Leeds — but he kept trying to repeat that feat at every opportunity when there were better options on.

One effort brought a diving save from Crewe keeper Clayton Ince — but the rest just sparked touchline tirades from Micky Adams.

The Foxes boss’ mood will have improved after Dickov struck, though.
