Crewe boss looks set to start with Michael Higdon and Luke Rodgers for the visit of Northampton Town next Saturday as Crewe start life in League One after relegation from the Championship last season. He also has Luke Varney who could also be in contention but with goals not coming about in the friendlies many supporters may wonder where the goals will come from?
Crewe do need to strengthen their forward line after losing Eddie Johnson (Bradford), Steve Jones (Burnley) and Gareth Taylor (Tranmere Rovers).
Sheffield born Mellor was a target two-years ago but the young striker decided to battle it out at Anfield. 23-year old Mellor has had loan spells at West Ham and last season at Wigan Athletic before he picked up a knee injury that ruled him out for the rest of the season. Although Mellor has been a prolific scorer in the reserves he has struggled to gain many apperances at first team level.
With Mellor's impending avaliabilty a few clubs could also be interested, Stoke City have already been linked with Neil Mellor and no doubt a few more clubs may look at the striker.
