With the emergency loan window due to close today it is understood that League One side Southend United have expressed an interest to take Crewe captain Billy Jones on loan until January with a view of siging him permanently.

Jones who has recently come back from injury was on the bench in Crewe's 2-1 home win over Burton Albion and has not featured since the 2-1 defeat at home to Port Vale back in mid October prior to that Jones saw red in the game against Bury for a professional foul.

26-year-old Jones was signed from Exeter City back in May 2007 for a fee in the region of £65k and has made 71 league apperances for the Railwaymen. Although the Gillingham born defender has quashed rumours about wanting to move back down south with his young family this offer may be suite both parties.

Jones who was installed as club captain at the begining of the season by previuos manager Gudjon Thordarson has struggled with injury in recent weeks and has only returned to training last week and may find it hard to regain his place as left back due to the emergence of Ashley Westwood and Matt Tootle who have played in that position in recent weeks.

Jones signed a three year deal back in 2007 and his contract will expire next summer.
