Jonah's impressive display in a behind closed doors game this week ironically against Crewe has ensured that Jones is in the squad against Coventry City.
The player has more or less agreed to the move but the club is still awaiting a reply from Burnley Owen Coyle.
31-year-old Jones joined the Railwaymen from Leigh RMI for £75k back in 2003 but it took him a while to adjust and was loaned out to Rochdale. During his spell at the club he broke in to the Northern Ireland squad and went on to make 122 league apperances scoring 39 times.
This season Jones has only made 19 appearance of which two have been starts.
Manager Owen Coyle said "Crewe have made an approach to take Steve on loan and it is one we are thinking about over the weekend."
Crewe Technical Director Steve Holland said: "Steve Jones is a player we have talked about before because he is an experienced player now who has played a lot of games in the Championship and is an international with Northern Ireland.
"We have been looking for someone who could provide more of a threat from the wing. Steve has that experience and a proven track record of goals from that position. He looked physically good against our reserves on Tuesday, and as quick and as dangerous as he was when he was here with us. He scored two good goals and after gaining permission from Burnley, we have now spoken to him.
"He seems keen to come back to Crewe on loan and give something back. He wants to help us out and we know his qualities. That was a very encouraging sign and we are waiting now to hear from Burnley.
"There seems to be some activity going on there, so maybe that's the reason for the short delay. We just have to sit on this one but if we get the green light then it is something we would do."
