He is one of the most intelligent footballers...

The former Alex fans hero and England U-21 manager David Platt has high praise for 15 goal striker Dean Ashton. Despite a hit and miss couple of seasons after bursting onto the scene at 17, Dean has got his head down this season and has improved all aspects of his game and has, arguably, been player of the season.

The 20 year old received his first U-21 call up this season by Platt and scored in his debut against Holland before his 2nd game, earlier this week, saw yet another goal from Deano. His total goal tally this season has hit the heights of 17.

Platt couldn't praise Deano enough following his 2nd U-21 international goal, and has even revealed Arsenal DID bid for him as a 17 year old: "I have watched Dean a few times for Crewe and I think he is an exceptionally talented footballer.

"He is one of the most intelligent footballers I have ever worked with at this level - and if a footballer is intelligent, he takes things in. Sometimes they'll disagree with you but they'll also take little nuggets of info from you. He knows the game. He knows what he is about.

"I think one of Dean's biggest problems was that he burst onto the scene and then I am led to believe that Arsenal put in a bid for him.

"It wasn't right for Dean at the time to get swallowed up at Arsenal. Now if you look at him, he is one of the most experienced players in the Under-21 squad in terms of games played. He's had one or two injury problems but now he is getting back to the type of player everyone thought he was going to be when he was a youngster."

Dean, meanwhile, dished out some praise of his own: "I believe in my own ability. I've got to thank David Platt for picking me but hopefully I've done him proud. There are all sorts of memorabilia at Crewe from when David used to play there and people like him are an inspiration to me.

"I watched him playing when I was younger and I always wanted to do the same. I want to play at the highest level and go as far as I can go in the game myself.

"I do want to play in the Premiership and whenever the time comes to move, I'll look forward to it. But I'm still concentrating on working hard for Crewe now and doing my best for them."
