Higdon came into the side with a reputation as a free scoring midfielder in the academy sides, and when the Alex injury crisis began to take its toll, Gradi, a firm believer in youth, had no hesitation in blooding the 21-year-old against Wigan Athletic prior to Christmas.
However, the Liverpudlian has failed to impress management and fans alike and with the imminent return of the inspirational Justin Cochrane, along with Neil Sorvel, Ben Rix, Lee Bell and Billy Jones, the midfield is looking much healthier. Also, with captain Dave Brammer nearing a return in about March, Higdon faces very stiff competition.
Manager Dario Gradi explained that he dropped Higdon to the substitutes bench for last Saturday’s trip to Walsall's Bescot Stadium in hope of giving the side a fresher look. Dario: "I thought Mike needed to be taken out of the firing line as, instead of his performances improving, they were getting worse. That is the time when you need to take them out and give them a breather to see what they're like when they go back in."
