Eamon Zayed is a 6ft tall pacey striker with bags of tricks up his sleeve but you can't be blamed for not knowing who he was when he was announced as the only new signing of the season.

Zayed scored a goal against Port Vale in a reserve match a couple of weeks ago when on trial but that was only in front of Neil Baker, today Zayed gets a chance to impress Dario Gradi - who's only see him on astro turf.

Zayed will line up against Mansfield with the likes of Adie Moses, Richard Walker and Lee Bell. If the Irish striker impresses enough then he could find himself in the 16 that travels to Walsall this Saturday.

Zayed is hoping that's the case: "This is a great opportunity for me. It's what I've always wanted and I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully I will do well against Mansfield. I'm a striker and I like to score goals, so I'll be trying to get a goal or two and give Dario something to think about with the game on Saturday"

Zayed, who wrote to Baker asking for a trial, has come so close yet so far to getting a break in Englis football with Arsenal keeping him on till he was 17 and Leicester till he was 18. Zayed has now had several clubs to chose from:

"There was a couple of others interested. I went over to Everton on trial last week and they wanted me to go back for another week. I was also asked to go to Spain with Dinamo Moscow on trial as well and, apparently, another team came in on Friday wanting to take me on loan as well.

"But I'd already made my mind up to come to Crewe as I like the set-up here and I think I'll have a chance."
