Don't make me laugh, says Dario

Dario, like many other managers, refuse to speak to agents and leave that down to his staff and Dario told the Crewe Chronicle why he won't speak to players agents.

"One of the disturbing features of the advent of agents is that sometimes you don't even get a chance to speak to the players.

"Last year, we conducted transfer offers for players who we never ever got to speak to. On one occasion we didn't have a number for a player. The agents got in touch and asked were we interested in him? We said: 'Yes, we are.'

"We agreed everything with the agent and then the agent said I want £40,000 for myself! The boy is now actually playing in the Third Division but I don't know if he ever knew of our interest."

The past month has seen agents involved in Crewe dealings, with Ben Williams's agent telling the club it seems certain Ben will sign on his return from holiday and Dave Brammer's agent more or less slagged off Crewe's contrac offer for the captain.

In the end though Dario just finds them funny, just like Wayne Collins's agent:

"When we signed Wayne Collins for the second time, I said to him: 'This is the offer. I can't do any better than that so there's no point your agent getting involved in this.

"Anyway, he wrote to me enclosing a letter from his agent. He said: 'We players get embarrassed talking about money, which is why we have agents.' I looked at the agent's demands and wrote back saying that by the time I got to the fifth one I was laughing, which is why we managers don't talk to agents.

"In the end, Wayne went elsewhere but at the eleventh hour decided he was better off here and accepted our original offer."
