Dean delighted with hat-trick

Dean Ashton admitted he was pleased to forget the penalty miss against Sheffield United last Tuesday with a sweet hat trick at high flying Wigan at the weekend. Ashton smashed a penalty high into the Gresty Road End in the demoralising defeat to the ten man Blades.

The reds' star striker placed two perfect penalties past John Filan in a six minute spell on Saturday to banish Tuesday's painful memories into the past.

"I really, really wanted to take that first one and show the other night was a one-off", said Dean.

Ashton revealed that Dario Gradi is opposed to the same penalty taker having two spot kicks, but the Alex number ten persuaded Kenny Lunt to let him have the second one, and the rest is history:

"I know the boss doesn't like the same guy to take a second penalty and when we got the next Kenny Lunt was saying the boss had told him to take it. But I wanted that one as well."

As for the excellent third goal, a left foot half volley from an acute angle, Deano conceeded that it contained a little luck and not pure skill:

“I can’t remember anything about the third goal. I just turned and hit it for some ridiculous reason and it went into the back of the net. We have started sliding and hopefully this can turn things around and take us back to the middle of the table.

“The ball will take pride of place in my bedroom. All strikers want to score hat-tricks and I’m no different.
