43-year-old Davis is no stranger to the Alex as the former defender started his career with the Railwaymen back in 1983 before joining Burnley in 1987.

Davis made 166 appearances for the Railwaymen and also went on to play for Barnsley, York and Oxford United.

Davis started his managerial career at Northwich Victoria in June 2003 taking over from Jimmy Quinn but that was short lived and he resigned in September with the Vics in the bottom two of the Conference.

Davis took over at Nantwich Town in 2004 and during the five years in charge guided the Dabbers to two promotions and the FA Trophy 2006 along with the Cheshire Senior Cup in 2008 where they defeated a strong Altrincham side.

Last season Davis guided the Dabbers to the play-offs in the Unibond Premier League and narrowly missed out on promotion to the Conference North as they lost in the Play-off final against Ilkeston Town. The Dabbers also endured a good run in the FA Cup beating FC United, Halifax Town and Whitley Bay before losing in the last qualifier against Fleetwood Town.

Davis met up with Crewe officials over the weekend and a deal was completed but with Thordarson away in Sweden compleating his Pro-Licence the announcement has been delayed until Thordarsons arrival back into the country so that the two can be presented to the press.

Crewe turned to Davis after first choice Dave Kevan decided to stay at Notts County, other people mentioned with the position where York  manager Martin Foyle and former Chester City assistant Steve Bleasdale.
