Crewe unable to match star duo's terms

Financial implications mean that David Wright and captain Dave Brammer have taken a closer step to the Gresty Road exit door.

"I can't offer Dave Brammer or David Wright the contracts they are on at the moment", the experienced boss told The Sentinel.

The club moved to secure the services of Crewe's rising stars such as David Vaughan and Dean Ashton over the summer, but the wages that Wright and Brammer currently receive are well in excess of the likes of ther Welsh international and the 19-year old whizzkid.

"In fact we've signed three or four now on less money than Brammer is earning," revealed the manager.

Gradi has already expressed his willingness to let the £500k capture from Port Vale go for free next summer, because he was not a graduate of the Alex academy, but as David Wright has been on Crewe's books since the early 1990s, the club are reluctant to let him go for free.

"Dave (Brammer) is not going to sign a contract for that money so if he goes at the end of the season, he goes. We'll see the season out and see where we are and what we can offer him. If he wanted to be sold we'd let him go now, but I think he's happy to see his contract out.

"If he went for nothing at the end of the year it would be all right. But it wouldn't be all right for Dean Ashton or Ben Rix to go out of contract as they owe the scheme (youth system)."

The news follows a reported £500,000 bid from Chris Coleman's Fulham for the right-back, which the club were quick to dismiss, and the revelation that Wright spent a day training at Leeds United.
