Crewe pull out of race to sign Baptiste.

With Crewe securing the services of Daniel O'Donnell for £100k from Liverpool it seems boss Dario Gradi has pulled the plug on another defender.

Alex John-Baptiste had been tracked by Crewe but now it seems Mansfield's asking price of £250k has ended the interest for the 21-year-old defender.

The Railwaymen were at the head of the queue to land the impressive defender and the player had been shown round the facilities at Reaseheath and was impressed but with the Stags asking price, it now seems the player may look at another club.

Gradi said, "We won't sign both Danny and Baptiste.

"Mansfield want a substantial amount of money for their boy. His agent was keen on bringing him down here, but I've avoided that."

Other teams that are interested are Nottingham Forest, Norwich City and newly promoted Hartlepool United.
