Crewe look set to tie up a deal for Bradford City midfielder Steven Schumacher. 23-year-old Schumacher is out of contract at Valley Parade following the Bantams relegation to League Two and is one of ten players shown the door, as they rebuild for life in League Two.
The former Everton reserve made 130 appearances in the last three seasons for the Bantams and would cost the Railwaymen a nominal fee (10k) as the player is out of contract and was not offered a new contract at Bradford. Schumacher who was also England schoolboy international was the clubs second top goal scorer netting 7 times last season including a goal against Crewe in the FA Cup.
It seems that Schumacher gave a parting shot at the club last week after being told of his release.
Speaking to the Bradford Telegraph and Argos Schumacher "I've enjoyed it totally. I played 130 games and in the two seasons when I've been injury-free I've become second leading goal scorer, which is a good feat from midfield.
"But the last couple of weeks were hard with the fans getting on my back.
"Maybe I became a scapegoat for us going down. There were other players who didn't come in for a bit of the criticism I got who might have.
"I hope the fans won't just remember me for that and will look back and see that I always tried 100 per cent in every game.
"The majority of fans have been great, especially the away ones. To travel every week and watch a side that have struggled was a great effort."Debut Apps (+ sub) Goals Yellows Reds 07/08/2004 122 (8) 15 24 1 01/11/2003 6 (0) 1 0 0 First App. Apps (+ sub) Goals Yellows Reds 05/08/2006 49 (0) 7 8 1 06/08/2005 28 (7) 2 6 0 07/08/2004 45 (1) 6 10 0 01/11/2003 6 (0) 1 0 0
