Two well taken goals from Kevin O'Connor and Gui Finkler by Championship side Wolves sealed a 2-0 win tonight at Gresty Road.
It was Crewe's last home game before the League One curtainraiser against Northampton Town a week on Saturday and yet again they failed to find the net for the third game running.
With chances for both teams it was Wolves that made Crewe pay by taking their chances. In the first half Vaughan, Rodgers and Rix all had chances but it was Wolves that drew first blood with Kevin O'Connor scoring just before half time with a 30-yard screamer after the new signing Baudet lost possession out side the Crewe box.
Half-time 0-1
When the game restarted new Wolves boss Mick McCarthy made five changes and within two minutes Wolves nearly doubled the lead with O'Connor again testing Williams.
Yet again Rodgers nearly scored after being set up with a through ball from Vaughan but sub keeper Michael Oakes blocked the shot and with the loose ball finding Higdon, Oakes pulled off another save.
Crewe looked the stronger and it was Billy Jones who had a chance but he could only find the side netting after being set up by Vaughan.
Subs this time from Crewe boss Dario Gradi but it was Wolves this time that made Crewe pay. Former Ipswich and Birmingham player Jamie Clapham was tackled on the edge of the Crewe box and the resulting ball fell to Wolves new signing Gui Finkler and the Brazilian unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot into the cornor of the net.
With the final 10 minutes of the game it seemed that both teams went throught the motions.
