The 36-year-old defender has decided to call it a day when his contract expires at the end of this season.

Cox's career started back in 1990 when he played for his hometown team of Scunthorpe United. He then went and signed for Aston Villa in a £400k move then made three other big moves to Middlesborough (£1m), Bolton (£1.5m) and Watford (£500k) where he made the most appearances for the Hornets.

Cox who signed for the Railwaymen back in 2006 from Cardiff City has made over 50 apperances playing as a central defender and as a defensive midfielder.

Cox told the office site CreweAlex.net: 'I want to spend a bit more time with my wife and my two daughters and see what might materialise in the future. I'm sure I will return to the game in some capacity in the future, but at the moment I want to concentrate on the remainder of this season and then if anything interesting comes up.

'I've had a great career but as a professional footballer you have to make sacrifices when it comes to your family life, especially when it comes to Christmas, Easter and the holiday period.'
