Paul Merson hit an unstoppable volley with five minutes to go against the Potters to salvage a point following Carl Asaba’s first half opener. The gifted midfielder joined the Saddlers along with Stefan Oakes and Vinny Samways this summer and has made his mark already, scoring four goals already.

“Tactically I changed our approach and that upset Stoke and caused them problems”, Lee told BBC Ceefax.

“If we had not got anything we would have been disappointed.

“In the end we nearly won it and I was pleased with the way we finished the game. We are now looking forward to getting back in action at Crewe”, the former Wolves manager added.

Don’t forget that the game has been put back from its scheduled kick-off time of 1500 to 1945 to cater for the Crewe festival.
