England U-21s were led by Shola Ameobi and Jermain Defoe but they failed to help England as they lost to a goal which was scored within 65 seconds of the whistle. Despite being named on the bench the nearest Ashton got to the action was warming up on the tocuh line.

Meanwhile the BBC say David Vaughan could start at left back for Wales tomorrow afternoon at the Millennium Stadium against Serbia.

"The midfield seems to be the most troublesome area to fill, but Hughes remained tight lipped the possibility of moving captain Gary Speed form left-back to a central role.

Crewe youngster David Vaughan, who made an impressive debut against the USA in August, could then take Speed's place at left-back.

Wales (probable): P Jones, R Edwards, M Delaney, D Gabbidon, D Vaughan, J Oster, G Speed (capt), C Robinson, C Bellamy, J Hartson, R Giggs."
