Whilst everyone was still high about the signing for Ben Williams Dario went and stuck his foot in it, by signing Andy White. White was released on Thursday by Mansfield Town and Dario moved quickly over the weekend to get him - not that there was a great que.
You may remember the 6ft 4in striker from his loan spell at the Alex in the 2002-2003 season, where he was swapped for two months with Colin Little. He only ever made two cameo appearances but it was enough to impress Dario who tried and tried again to get White on a permanent deal. Last season Dario had a nominal fee rejected by Mansfield and so Dario just waited to see if they re-newed his contract.
Fortunately for Dario, they didn't and he was released with eight other players and he today signed a one year contract. Last season saw White have poor loan spells at Kidderminster, Boston and Burton Albion where he made 16 loan appearances but only score twice. They were the only goals of last season for him.
His 10 goals in 68 appearances for Mansfield show even more why Crewe fans are bound to be a bit disgruntled at the signing, with Paul Tait bound to be compared. We can only hope he proves us wrong.
