Alex XI Flop At Kidsgrove

The defeat just about highlighted our need for a striker. Varney and Robinson are the two strikers behind Jones, Edwards and Ashton in the front line. I think it's fair to say that with Ashton the only recognised division one goal scorer in them that we may struggle.

Luke Varney signed from Quorn last season I think he's still another season from making a break through. Robinson on the other hand i never saw as a striker. Always an attacking midfielder he was describe as until this pre-season when he suddenly became a striker. Neither Varney or Robinson are good enough to be chucked in for a few games should Ashton, Edwards or Jones get injured any time next season. So who is? No-one at
Crewe obviously.

Last night the Alex youth/reserve team took on Kidsgroves. McCready made a welcomed come back and Neil Sorvel made an appearance but Kidsgrove were too strong and won it easily 3-1. Michael Higdon scored a consolation in the last seconds. No signs of any strength in depth there and with Paul Edwards out for 6 weeks things are looking thing up front.

I’m more than confident the starting 11 on Saturday would take us to a comfy mid table spot by the end of the season(No pressure there lads) but that's if we had no injuries. If either Ashton or Jones were to get injured on Saturday I think we'll struggle to take off for the opening games of the season. I’m not saying Robinson or Varney are bad players as there is talent there but at the moment they aren't good enough to be chucked in at the deep end.

Dario's made it clear he isn't happy with the competition for places upfront on Saturday - which is somewhat different to what he said when Hulse went when he put his face in youngsters.

Its clear Dario wants Luke Rodgers from
Shrewsbury but it's also clear Dario won't gamble a tad. Shrewsbury may be willing to sell Rodgers at around £600k, that’s £200k off the thought to be Alex offer of £400k. Is an extra £200k worth the gamble if it increases the chances of a good season? Well from what I've heard about Rodgers then yes! Rodgers & Ashton upfront with Jonah on the wings would be a brilliant strike force.

Come on Dario - you've let Hulse go without much of a fight lets spend the money we got for him on his replacement! We sold Rivers and not replacing him proved costly now lets not see the same mistake!
