Crewe are believed to have renewed their interest in 6'5 Lincoln defender Gareth McAuley. Crewe were alerted to McAuley during their 5-1 Carling Cup mauling along with a host of other Lincoln players such as Lee Beevers and Jamie McCombe. However, at the time the Cheshire club decided that McAuley wasn't as dominant in the air as his height might suggest. This is highlighted by the fact that when circumstances allow, Lincoln boss Keith Alexander sometimes prefers McAuley at left back as opposed to his usual centre back position.
Crewe were interested in McAuley during early 2004 before he joined Lincoln from Coleraine for an undisclosed fee. The Northern Irish youngster is now beginning to attract the attention of 'bigger' clubs such as Doncaster, Crewe and Leicester. However, at a time when Crewe are watching so many players it is difficult to say who will be coming and going during January's transfer window.
