Alex look like missing out on Warnock

Stephen Warnock reportedly met with Crewe manager Dario Gradi on Tuesday, but the Railwaymen seem to have lost the batttle to sign the Ormskirk-born youngster, report Reds fanzine 'The Liverpool Way'.

Richie Partridge recommended Coventry to Warnock, having spent the best part of last season on loan there, and with McAllister being an ex-Liverpool man, Coventry always looked the more likely to get the 22 year-old's signature.

Gérard Houllier had apparently told Gradi that the transfer of Warnock to South Cheshire was a formality, but after Partridge's intervention it now looks unlikely.

Another potential Alex target at Anfield, this time goal machine Neil Mellor has been linked with a move to George Burley's Derby County, report 'Kop Talk'. With the imminent departure of Rob Hulse, Crewe desperately need a proven goalscorer. County have already signed former Crewe defender Dave Walton and Aston Villa veteran Ian Taylor.
