Abusive fans upset Crewes Bell

Midfielder Lee Bell has criticised a group of Crewe supporters for abusing certain players during the 2-1 home victory over Morecambe on Friday."The players can take criticism but not personal criticism and I think they were personal at some points today," Bell told BBC Radio Stoke.

"They're entitled to have their say but some of it was bang out of order."

The Alex are six points away from a play-off place and are set for a third consecutive season in League Two.

Dario Gradi's side were third at the start of February but an alarming spell of form saw them drop into the bottom half of the table before the victory over the Shrimps.

"We're not playing brilliantly and I haven't played well for a quarter of the season," admitted Bell. "A lot of the fans are on our side, but some of it today was really personal.

"Some of the boys are 20 and 21 and they take that home with them. We're not Premier League footballers, we don't go home to big mansions, they're young kids."

Bell started his career with Crewe while they were in the Championship and returned to the club at the start of the season after spells with Mansfield and Macclesfield.

He believes expectations of success are too high for some supporters.

"The fans are frustrated because Crewe got into the Championship, which is an unbelievable achievement," added Bell.

"No disrespect to the players that we've got now, we're going to have some top Championship players, but they're used to seeing Dean Ashton play here.

"Dean Ashton isn't here any more. In midfield, they're used to seeing Seth Johnson, Dave Brammer and Neil Lennon. They're not here and I'm not them.

"I try my best every game and I think, at times, it can affect players, particularly the younger lads.

"We've got a 16-year-old [Max Clayton] coming on who doesn't need to be hearing boos.

"That's not all the fans, most of them are really good, but some of it today was unacceptable."
