The 29 year old striker signed on a month-to-month contract today. The now Crewe player had talked to Dario yesterday and today was travelling down to put pen to paper.

Barnsley though had other things in mind and offered Smart a one year deal to join them so he called Dario and called his move to Crewe off. Two hours later thought it emerged that Smart could sign for Barnsley due to their financial restrictions.

The Alex allowed the Perth striker to return to the Alex and Smart signed for Crewe. Allan Smart is a big 6ft 3in striker who's been well travelled. Starting his career at Inverness he wasn't able to get any games but Preston signed him and 6 goals in 17 games wasn't enough and after loans to Carlisle and Northampton Smart went back to Carlisle on a free transfer. A full season under his belt saw him score 16 in 42 games and led to a £100k move to Premiership Watford.

In the Premiership & Division One he 12 goals in 48 games. He was again loaned out to the likes of Hibs and Stoke before Oldham bought him for £225k. 6 goals in 14 games were good enough but after off the pitch incidents, like being arrested, Smart was released from Oldham 7 months after buying him.

Smart spent most of last season at Dundee United but was used mainly to wam their bench. With no goals in 17 appearences Smart was released. Smart could go into the side on Saturday and will probably appear on the bench.
