Wrexham review

I was unable to attend the away game at Wimbledon for reasons beyond my control, so last night was the first game of the season for me and a few others I would guess.

The thing that struck me as the first half drew on tediously was the lack of invention. Cochrane and Brammer were giving nothing away and not afraid to put themselves about, but Steve Jones and Dean Ashton were feeding off scraps. The pathetic refereeing on show overshadowed the play, with official Tony Parkes taking centre stage.

Justin Cochrane and Darren Ferguson were booked for innocent fouls, but the card happy referee had to make his mark by booking the two. I know that Denis Smith is a bitter old clayhead but I agree with his views on the referee - he was booking players out of his arse.

The midfield looked really strong and 100% committed last night, and I was impressed with both the skipper Brammer and Justin Cochrane in the centre. The amount of times I've heard fans claiming he is the next Vieira is amazing - but he plays just like the Frenchman - uncompromising, strong and committed.

Moses and Foz were also strong enough, and with Richard Walker and Chris McCready waiting in the wings, we look okay as far as centre-halves are concerned. It's just that left back place that continues to worry me. Saying, that Vaughan was his reliable self, and treated the Wrexham defenders to a couple of his customary mazy runs. Thats our Welsh Wizard!

Deano opened his account with a bullet penalty past veteran keeper Andy Dibble, which was good for him - he needed to get that first goal under his belt considering his position as the clubs number one striker now. He looked extremely fit last night - he has shedded a few pounds and chased down balls that he wouldn't have done in the past.

Steve Jones' goal was class, an opportunist's lob over the stranded Dibble to seal the points and our first win of the campaign. It was good for him to bag an early goal this season for the same reason as Dean - he has an unprecedented responsibility on his shoulders this term.

I just feel that we need to draft in an experienced striker to help out Jones and Ashton. That is my plea to Dario and the board, because there were times when we struggled and let the Welshman walk over us. I'm sure we'll sort it out, and besides, we've seen nothing of Walters yet. We live in hope!
