Rodney Jack: A tribute

Dario Gradi broke the bank to secure the services of Rodney Jack, £650,000 from Torquay United in July 1998.

He made a real impact, scoring both goals in the 2-0 victory over Oldham Athletic in the League Cup on his debut and he went on to score 11 goals, which was the product of a good understanding between himself and Colin Little. He also formed partnerships with Mark Rivers and Steve Anthrobus throughout the season as well as playing on either flank or just behind the front two. He quickly became a favourite amongst the fans for his explosive nature and willingness to take on any defence.

His second was less successful as Crewe evaded relegation on the last day of the season, beating Barnsley 2-0 at Oakwell, with Jack only bagging 4 goals, the same as in 2000-01.

The next season saw Crewe relegated as Rodney underfired yet again, and some fans began to question the price tag of £650,000, with him only returning fifteen goals in the space of three years.

He really came into his own in the Second Division last season, enjoying the promotion winning campaign and in doing so scoring sixteen goals, his highest total in the five years he was in South Cheshire.

He could turn a game round in one moment of genius and once he was past a defender, they had no chance of catching him. His cult status at Crewe wasn't just down to his playing skills, but also the charming manner in which he exhibited himself off the field. He was always willing to share a photo with a fan or sign an autograph for the kids, and many will be very saddened to see him go.

It was just a shame that Rodney's move was fuelled by money. It shows the financial climate in the world of football these days in that a man can put behind the relationship he has with the fans just for more money.

I do, however, wish him all the very best because he has brought delight to many, if not all of us over the last five years. All the best Rodders.
