It was obvious this news was going to break soon enough, especially after Rob rejected Dario's contract extension. He is a local lad who watched Crewe from the terraces and it is heartbreaking to think that he is going. He built a massive fanbase with his never ending workrate, he was one of us on the field. He was the nicest bloke you could ever meet and I'm glad I had the opportunity to speak to him a couple of times.
I agree that it is the right move for both he and the club though. His aspirations are bigger than a club like Crewe - he has the ability to play in the Premiership, and hopefully that is where he will go. Full credit to Hulsey who did not stall over it and in doing so receive a 'golden handshake' from any prospective new employer. It shows he really cares for the club.
The club also needs security though. We have spent a long long period of time nurturing his obvious talent, and this is why the academy was built and so much emphasis went on the building of it ahead of rebuilding the squad. The subsequent transfer of Hulsey will almost certainly cover any losses and maybe give us a few £100,000 profit.
We are now left with one out and out striker at the club - Dean Ashton - who is already being looked at by bigger clubs. I still think he will stay for at least another year, but questions remain over whether he is mentally or physically ready to be given the mantle of the clubs number one striking berth.
Neil Mellor is the obvious target. Dario has long been lining up a bid for the young Liverpool star and with the Shaun Smith/Steve Macauley testimonials coming up, there is a chance that Gradi and Houllier will thrash out a deal.
As Hulse looks to leave Gresty Road, I want to thank him for all hes done for Crewe and I hope that he finds a club that will respect him as much as we do. All the best Hulsey lad, you are a Crewe legend.
