Neil Sorvel on his successful spell as captain

He talked to BBC Radio Stoke’s Graham McGarry about his five-game run as club captain.

Despite losing two home games during his reign as captain, Sorvs remains positive, and was glad Crewe got a win under their belts against Wycombe on Tuesday. "We badly needed it after the two previous games, so hopefully now we can go on a bit of a run again.

"We’re still in that second spot, we know Cardiff are right behind us, and with that game in hand, they can go above us, but we have to concentrate on ourselves, put some good performances in, and get as many three-points as we can."

Sorvel has put up with a torrid amount of abuse from Crewe regulars over the past few years, but he thinks his position in the side is valuable to the club. "I’ll continue it (his role in the team), its good for the teams point of view, as there’s competition for places, everyone’s pushing hard to get in the starting eleven. It can only benefit the club."

Sorvel wasn’t made captain for his goal scoring, he only has one to his name this season – that rasping 25 yard drive on the opening day of the season away at Northampton. Despite Rob Hulse, Dean Ashton, Rodney Jack and Steve Jones all scoring freely this season, Sorvs would like to improve his record.

"I wouldn’t say I’m concerned, obviously I’ d like to score more goals. I’m a bit disappointed I didn’t score on Tuesday night (against Wycombe Wanderers) – it was cleared off the line – I really should have scored. If I keep doing my best, hopefully some goals will come along.

Dave Brammer’s absence has meant more responsibility for Sorvel towards the clubs youngsters, and he has enjoyed his spell of being club skipper, and sees it as being a milestone in his career. "I wasn’t a big talker on the field, but after I’ve been given the captain’s armband, and I’ve become a bit more talkative out there.

"I didn’t expect it, but if the manager wants me to do the job, then I don’t mind, I’ll take it on. I’m not really bothered, as long as I’m in the starting eleven, then I don’t mind."

A big thumbs-up from CreweAlex.com to Neil on his spell as club skipper, he has shown his true worth to the side over the past few weeks, despite having to put up with the boo-boys.
