It's a touchy subject. Our downfall, for many fans, is being too soft on teams and soft we are. We are storming the fair play league for the umpteenth time in over 10 years of football. Committing a foul gets you one point, a yellow card gets you 2 points and a sending off will give you 5 points but over the course of this season we have averaged just 9.1 points per game.
That's considerably less than today's opponents, Cardiff, who have averaged 13.2 and that huge gap doesn't signal their place at the bottom of the table - they are 2nd, behind us. In-fact, the whole of the Nationwide have failed to come within under 4.0 points of us, with second division Hartlepool 2nd, out of 72 teams, with 13.1 points per game.
As many people believe it's the cards which play the main roll, I think Macclesfield are a prime example that this isn't the case. Seven red cards and they still sit top of the 3rd division. It comes down to fouls and whilst 276 committed fouls from Crewe may seem alot over the course of 36 games, but Millwall's 600 fouls does it justice.
It's possible this may be our downfall. We may be falling short when it comes to stopping those attacking runs down the centre of our backing off defence, where most teams would go for the kill and hope that the ball is at their feet at the end, and if it isn't then at least the attack was broken down.
So, should we get a tad more ruthless with our play?, it's not done Norwich any harm with 510 fouls they sit top of the league. But that's not what Dario's about and any yellow card is frowned upon, although Dario telling Cochrane he needs to be booked to do his job may be signs that the master is loosening the strap on his team.
Or..
Dario certainly believes it's league to aim for and the £10,000 cheque every season certainly seems worth it, see it as pocket money for being good. We have no reason to be bad boys, its taken Bradford, with 500 fouls, no further so why should we be sucked into it?
Blaming our shoddy defending on the fair play league is called looking for excuses. Be proud of the team for 'playing football the right way', don't turn it into a negative pop at the team when the team lose...
