Hulse: 4 goals in 3 games
It was a matter of how many we would lose by before the game started 4-0? 5-0? 6-0? William Hill had us 80-1 to lose 9-0. However we gave City and Keegan something to think about. The match had just kicked off, Wright knocked it forward for Hulse who tried a long shot from outside the area and with Schmeichel off guard it was perfect for Jack to take advantage of Schmeichel's spill and smash it into the corner.
Brilliant start, Crewe fans were still filtering in unaware of what had happened and so were thousands of City fans outside who were queing to get in. The one's inside the ground were stund, only 20 seconds of football and it was one-nil but the rest of that half we found it hard to get City out of our half. Richard Walker got round Anelka to poke the ball away minutes after the restart. Walker and Foster were once again excellent and Walker did brilliant to keep anelka quit for 90 minutes of the match.
Jack tried the double the lead when he weaved into the Penalty area and from the left on a tight angle all he could do was ripple the side netting with Schmeichel spreading himself like he's famous for. Dean Ashton tried to impose himself but was obviously annoyed that he wasn't up front to get more chances, he best chance was wasted from 30 yards out he was free but scuffed his long range shot into the ground. Hulse was chasing every ball but most were too long and he just couldn't get a break infront of goal. Meanwhile Berkovic's long shot was easily saved by Ince while Jensens bobbled along the floor for a easy gavering. Berkovic nearly put the Blues ahead when his header rocked the crossbar. Only a few minutes later Berkovic came under fire from his own fans, Berkovic ran into the box closely followed by Wright, who did superb against him all the way through, and Beerkovic just took a obvious dive while the ball went out for a goal kick. As Ince lined up the kick Berkovic had a bit of an argument with a women at the opposite end to the Crewe fans - not sure what it was, hopefully a telling off for the cheating scumbag
There were no real chances for City but no others for Crewe either. The only other talking point of the half was Hulse being elbowed when going for a header. Over half-time the mascots of Crewe and City had a shoot out, 3-3 and Gresty certainly could come under fire for fixing the result, knocking one in after saving it.
Second half came and still 1-0 and City put pressure on from minute one they got into the box and just when Berkovic could have squared it from the byline inside the box he takes another dive right infront of the Crewe fans, claiming he was brought down by Walker - the ref said no but he moaned about it for the
Winning goal
next ten minutes. The biggest worry was only 5 minutes into the half and there was a massive scrap, City brought it down the right and within seconds the ball was going everywhere as the Alex had a 11 man defence shots from Anelka, Berkovic and Foe all got deflected out beofre Lunt booted it. It was always a matter of when Keegans men would score, especially when he had just broughton Wright-Phillips and Huckerby. Anelka came closet when he pulled away from Walker to knock past Ince from the left only for the post to send the ball accross the goal mouth out for a throw. was this acutally going to be our night? Was lady luck looking down on us?
They finally scored though, 70th minute the defence seemed to open a gap to expose Ince in goal and from 15 yards out Berkovic smashed a great shot into the bottom left hand corner, Ince stood no chance, it acutally looked wide at first. Jack got a injury around the 77th minute, looked like his calf after pulling up after chasing Wright-Phillips - Dario urgently got Jones ready and sent him on in place, he made an impact. First he gave away a free-kick while reciving a yellow card the resulting free kick found Huckerby to the left of the goal to smash at Ince - Ince would have had it but an unfortunate Walker got in the way and from the deflection it looped over Ince into the far corner. had the floodgates opened? No, Crewe went to the other end and had a great chance a Wright cross found Jones unmarked at the far post only to put his low header at Schmeichel . Then seconds later Jonsey ran down the left and with his lightening pace cut inside and with Schmeichel spreading himself Jones took the option to pull it back to Hulse who was free infront of goal to roll it under the keeper. Straight from the kick off City put it back to 3-2 - while Crewe celebrated they passed it down to Ince's goal where Wright Phillips brught it back for Huckerby to smash straight into Inces path but it was too powerful and quick and ended up smacking the top of the net as City went 3-2 up.
Overall an excellent performance from Crewe and confidence will now be sky high ready for a massive match at Gresty Road on Saturday - QPR a must win to stay in the promotion hunting pack.
